Each side gets eight pawns starting on the second rank (row).
Pawns move forward one square at a time.
However, if the pawn has not been moved yet, it can move two spaces forward on it's first move.
Even though pawns only move forward, they attack and capture other pieces diagonally.
A special rule in chess that involves a pawn capture that can only occur immediately after a pawn makes a double-step move from its starting square, and it could have been captured by an enemy pawn had it advanced only one square.
Once reaching the back rank, your pawn can promote to anything you want except a pawn or king (usually promoted to a queen).
