Each side gets two knights starting on their first rank (row).
The knight moves to a square that is two squares away horizontally and one square vertically, or two squares vertically and one square horizontally.
The complete move therefore looks like the letter "L". Knights have the ability to jump over other pieces, including it's own pieces!
Place knights in the center of the board where most of the action is at. A well placed knight can attack (and defend) a lot of squares!
Knights are great for forking enemy pieces. Here the knight forks, or attacks the enemy king and rook at the same time.
"A knight on the rim is grim" refers to losing your knights scoping ability by placing it near the edge of the board.
